NatureView – A Tear in Space

A Tear in Space opens a portal to the infinite cosmos, inviting viewers into a realm of boundless amazement and contemplation.

The Composition

This is my most ambitious and dynamic creation to date. The piece marries reclaimed spalted Maple with advanced resin engineering, unified through a meticulous five-stage lamination process that creates deliberate visual separations. The wood itself was chosen for its weathered character—aged spalting and natural contrast that speaks to time's passage.

The resin layers incorporate color-shifting, thermochromic, and phosphorescent elements in a carefully orchestrated palette of yellow, orange, green, blue, and purple. These hues deliberately contrast with the warm tones of the Maple, creating transparent visual windows that draw the eye deeper into the work.

The Technical Artistry

Beneath the surface lies a hidden architecture: etched and reflective panels that modulate light perception and create shifting depth with each viewing angle. Strategically positioned RGB LED lighting is integrated into the frame, casting complementary colors that amplify the main composition. The wood itself was sculpted to enhance its natural patterns, while the resin forms were sculpted separately to maximize luminous effects before permanent assembly.

The finished surfaces were individually refined to reveal their full beauty. Remarkably, the piece transforms entirely depending on lighting conditions—equally captivating in a fully illuminated space or complete darkness—with new details emerging each time you engage with it. It evokes the simultaneous experience of gazing into deep space or peering through a microscope.

The Frame

The frame is an integral extension of the artwork. White oak was treated with a modified Yakisugi technique to enhance its natural grain patterns, followed by layered ink applications creating a rich multicolor effect. Multiple hand-rubbed coats of specialty guitar oil finish complete the piece, yielding a warm, luminous satin patina.

This is a truly one-of-a-kind creation—a convergence of wood craft, resin innovation, and lighting design that demands to be experienced in person.

This piece includes a brass tag engraved with the title of the piece; serial number; date; and signature of the artist. 

Can be displayed on a wall or as a stand-alone piece.
