Our Process

At Unique Originals, we only make unique. The pieces are built one at a time with precision, quality and care.  You won’t find items like this at major retailers or big box stores. We specialize in handmade woodturning creations such as bowls, vases or boxes; custom made decor such as our very unique NatureView® light boxes and WorldView® resin light boxes, truly one-of-a-kind sculptures and custom made furniture such as live edge epoxy tables. We use only the highest quality of sustainably sourced wood and no or low VOC finishing products to fabricate your one-of-a-kind heirloom pieces.

We do everything to ensure your total satisfaction by asking lots of questions on custom orders. Educating our customers is a priority. We want you to understand the woods, what the advantages and disadvantages are for one finish over another, and presenting the various options available to you to meet your vision and tastes.  Once there is a solid concept of what is needed and wanted with your piece, a parts list is generated and tracked throughout the build process.

Once the wood is selected, we carefully place and orient the pieces to maximize their natural beauty. Pieces are arranged and “laid-up”, and then glued in the most aesthetically pleasing way. The process of selecting wood requires experience and a deeper knowledge of wood characteristics and a vision of how each part will look when finished.

The crafting of any furnishing requires shaping, machining, cutting the joinery, pre-sanding parts, assembling, and finish sanding.  These steps all require a strong attention to detail by the particular craftsperson. Finally, the finish is applied to the finely sanded piece. Typically, we use a penetrating oil, giving an everlasting type of finish. Three coats are applied and hand-rubbed into the grain of what has now become a finely crafted heirloom.  It is then buffed to a sheen and polish and wax applied.

We take pride in everything we create and aim for our products to be built so well, they'll last for generations.
