What is 'Spalting'?

If you have found this page, then you are obviously curious about this strange word, 'spalting', and what does it have to do with wood?

Spalting is a naturally occurring process that results in changes in the colorization of the wood. These changes manifest in visible bleaching, pigmented shades and/or lines.  This process can give shades of actual color, such as red, yellow or blue, to sections of the wood, while bleaching a section right next to it.  It also makes some parts of the wood more porous and some parts less porous, which can then absorb more resin, or less oil finish, as example. The finished product now has more contrast and is much more interesting to view.

It is also more difficult working with spalted wood.  Since the wood has changed in density, it requires an understanding of the structural differences. You now need to modify your techniques in processing, sanding and finishing to achieve your desired results, which also takes a lot more patience!

Spalting is caused by the growth of certain fungi and can only happen under special conditions.  Temperature, moisture content, pH, and the type of wood are some of the factors that can effect its growth and intensity.

The fungi are not harmful to humans and are NOT molds.  Regardless, the food contact products that we sell are sealed with a durable food safe finish.  Unique Originals tries to work exclusively with spalted wood.  The randomness of the spalting merged with intense colorization from the epoxy resins brings a natural balance to any art piece.
