Juniper Burl Bowl

Just completed is a bowl we were commissioned to make from Juniper Burl.  This burl was saved from a tree that grew at the family’s boyhood home many decades ago.  Our mission was to give this long-lost relic a new lease on life, so it could be used and enjoyed.  The project started with cleaning out all the dirt and rocks, and then trimming to make it more roundish.  The outside was cleaned, debarked and cast in green epoxy resin, the persons favorite color.

The goal during the wood turning was to bring out as much of the burl as possible, to honor this gorgeous wood and have the resin accent the live edge around the piece.

The 360 degree view of the live edge is the most beautiful feature. Upon applying the oil finish the edge turned almost black, making for a striking contrast and defining the lines.

Completing this look are the pockets of shimmering mica that settled into the live edge during casting, helping to annunciate the iridescent effect and adding another layer of definition.

The dimensions of the finished piece is 8” wide, 6 5/8” tall, 5 ½” deep and weighs almost 4 lb.  This beautiful heirloom quality piece will be cherished by this family for generations to come.
